Gill Copeland

Gill grew up in Yorkshire. After qualifying as a professional photographer, she started a career in travel photography, later setting up a commercial studio in London. During this time, she won numerous photography awards.

Gill then took a six-year break from photography to start a family and work in the corporate sector. It was when she was made redundant from this job that Gill started heading out on a Monday with a camera and a notebook, and began to sell her coastal images.

She held her first exhibition in 2001 and within three months had sold hundreds of copies of her work in fine art special edition print.

Today, in a career that has spanned over 25 years, Gill is one of the UK’s leading commercial fine art photographers and her work is sold, collected and published internationally. She is also the founder of several galleries and is presently director of the Brighton Fishing Quarter Gallery.

Gill is a passionate public speaker on photography and the power of visual thinking. She lives with her family in Sussex.

Gill Copeland Artist Statement

"As a Photographer I believe it is not what you see, but how you see it and your ability to convey this through the lens that is the true essence of photography, my subjects capture the serene beauty in nature and life through seascape, landscape, flora and travel.

My coastal images are of weather beaten shorelines, the spirit of the open air and sweeping shores. My landscapes capture wide open spaces with the ebb and flow of the land. My travel images are leisurely sun kissed afternoons, dappled light in the tranquil heat of the sun and vintage memories. Through my floral photography I see natures gentle beauty in shape, colour and form.

As a fine art photographer I am a purist, I use very little equipment and I don't manipulate my images, I try to capture it all when I click the shutter and do very little with the images after that, working in this way requires a lot of concentration and is quite a meditative process, this allows me to connect more with the mood or subject I shoot."
